I can’t believe it.
I can’t believe most writers I’ve seen online and have talked to personally are morning writers. When my writing career began, I didn’t think writing at night was special. Now that I believe there’s been an unintended war against night writing…
Let me turn you over to the dark side *Darth Sidious Voice*
Here are 7 reasons why night writing is the best and YOU should try it more:
You’re emotional at night because you’re tired—I do my best writing when I don’t care about anything happening around me anymore. I’m in my “free” state. When you reach that, you’re an unstoppable writer.
You have all day to think of ideas—The main reason why I started writing at night was to use my whole day to marinate on ideas. Heck, sometimes a crazy thing would happen to me, so I would change it up to write about that. There are so many possibilities you can open yourself up to with night writing. You can’t marinate on an idea while you’re asleep and write about it in the morning.
It’s a productive way to end your day—It’s always a win to get some writing done before bed. Plus, writing 1,000 words is a heavy way to start your day. That’s why I prefer editing in the mornings instead.
The aesthetic is AMAZING—Think about this. You’re sitting at your desk in your room with a window a few feet from your computer. As you write, you see the moon glistening in the sky. You see the airplane lights dance around in the air. You hear the crickets croaking in the background. Then you turn back around and all you see is the light from your computer screen staring back at you. Who wouldn’t want to write in that?! Not me.
There’s no time limit—I’m sure you have other things to do in the morning. Why set a time limit on yourself for such a freeing experience? Writing should have no boundaries. No worries. No fears of being late to a work meeting. Night writing is so much less pressure.
You get a braindump before you sleep—Writing is supposed to be therapeutic more than anything. I love to get that therapy at night. If I had a bad day, I love to get everything off my chest at night. It reduces my stress before I go to sleep, which means I’m knocked out like a baby.
Your raw voice is unlocked—I don’t know about you, but I tend to copy other writers’ voices whenever I read something by them. The morning is usually when you check your phone, read some stuff, and see what’s going on. It muddles your writing voice. When you write at night, there’s a nonchalantness you get with it that allows you to unlock your full writing voice after using the day to simmer on things. You’ve read enough content and now you’re ready to say YOUR piece. My writing is generic in the mornings.
These are just a few reasons why night writing can unlock your writing potential. Now, go and try it out!
Just for the record, I wrote this in the morning, but this doesn’t count lol.
I fell asleep early, and this isn’t my best writing anyway.
Back to night writing again after this post! :)
And welcome to the dark side!
It’s so true! I especially love the point of the brain dump before heading to bed. I literally woke up at 4am Monday with 75 ideas. Should have written them down the night before!
This is great! Point #1 and 5 definitely resonate for me.
