“I read your work on Medium.”
I had a Zoom call with a business prospect today. I smiled like a sloth when I heard those words from him. I tried to keep a straight face as much as I could because, you know, business is mostly emotionless.
But I couldn’t help it.
I can’t believe that even though I write on this platform now, people who used to read my work on Medium STILL hit me up to say how my Medium articles impacted them. That’s like someone who went to your rock concert when you were in a small band, and even though you’ve joined a new one since then, they still show up to watch you play.
It was ironic because that same person asked me another eye-opening question:
“Can I still start from scratch and create a business with my skills?”
My answer?
"Hell yeah!”
I’m paraphrasing, but that’s what popped into my head (lol).
But let’s skip the business part of things right now. Let’s talk writing.
I hate how my writing has been lately.
With AI growing stronger each day, and obviously having a business to promote, it feels like everything I do is hollow. It’s all rooted in money. It feels like my writing lost its soul, which is something I always tell experts NOT to do.
When I spoke with that guy today, his brief mention of my stint on Medium put a sparkle in my eye.
Not just because I was in disbelief that he followed me from there, but it gave me a stark reminder of why I do what I do. Sure, my business is centered around helping other experts make money by converting their expertise into authority-building stories, but that’s not what started it all for me.
I know you’ve heard this a million times, but Medium isn’t really where my writing journey began.
It began in 2017 when I created a WordPress blog about reality TV drama (reality TV was all the rage for me back then). I barely posted on there, but it marked the birth of something I couldn’t see yet.
Then, I created ANOTHER WordPress blog.
This time, on anime reviews. I was way more consistent on this one than the last one, but I still didn’t grasp my purpose back then as a writer.
Everything changed when I found Medium. It all started when I began to write and publish one article per day for a year (2020-2021). I’m sure you’ve seen me bring this article up a million times:
Sure, it went viral and made me thousands, but that’s not the true takeaway from this article.
The true takeaway is the hundreds of comments I got under this article from fellow writers talking about how much I’ve impacted them on their writing journey. From the people who had no idea how to start and needed a foundation to build upon. From the people who were scared to put their stories out into the cruel world.
Things like that gave me clarity on my purpose in the world:
To positively impact others with my writing.
The money and views are awesome, but I never want to forget the true reason why I do this. As an introverted kid who always had trouble expressing her emotions, writing was my friend when I needed it most. The fact that my writing has done the same for others is hard to put into words.
And let’s not forget the silent readers—the ones who don’t engage, but still read your work. Even when I got zero engagement, I still felt like someone in the world might see my little article one day and feel heard.
That’s what keeps me going when I want to give up.
I never want to lose that.
And I never want you to lose that either.
So…
Keep writing—and write from the heart.
Forget the business side. Forget the money. Forget the views.
Trust me, it will set you free.
I didn't give up Medium. I started there and appreciate it for extending my reach from two to four interested readers.
Keeping this article in mind as I continue on my Substack journey!
